1. Do I really need a professional locksmith?

There is a lot more to locks and keys than meets the eye. You would hope that the locks you have chosen to secure your home or workspace are secure and not easy to pick, and the keys not easy to duplicate. Having said that, in case of an emergency, you just might need your locks to be picked or a new key to be made. It is in times like these that a professional locksmith is required because a certain level of skill and expertise is necessary to do the job right.

2. What special qualifications do locksmiths have?

Locksmiths have to undergo training that lasts for four years. During this time, we learn about different types of locks and how they work. We learn the special skills required to work with locks. We also learn how to operate the equipment and use the tools that are a part of our trade. We learn everything from installing locks to their servicing and repair. We also learn how to make spare keys and replacement keys and how to remove a broken key from a lock. To be a licensed locksmith, we also have to pass police security checks.

3. What is rekeying?

Rekeying is a type of lock servicing. With time, the pin of a lock starts getting worn out and stop responding to the key. You will notice that sometimes in old locks, the key gets jammed and won’t turn and unlock it; that is when you need rekeying. Professional locksmiths have the special equipment to replace the old lock pins with new identical ones. We do this in a way that ensures that your old key will work perfectly well with the rekeyed lock. Rekeying saves you the trouble of having to buy a new lock and replace the key and spare keys for that lock.

4. Is there a special requirement for making spare keys?

We at Lock and Key Expert never duplicate a key unless we have proof of ownership of the vehicle or property that the key gives access to. Once we are sure that you are, in fact, the owner of the car, home or office, we will make a copy if possible. There are a few exceptions where we cannot make duplicates for you, and these include restricted keys and patented keys. In both these cases only, the original manufacturers of the keys will be able to make a copy for you, or you will need the permission of an authorized signatory.

5. Can a locksmith help if I lock my keys in my car?

Yes, absolutely. We can help in any sort of emergency where you find yourself locked out of your car. Just give us a call, and we will come to where you are to help you access your car again. We would advise that you don’t try and pick the lock of your car by yourself or get in any other way like forcing a window open. You could cause damage to the lock or other parts of your car if you do. Leave the job to the experts.

6. What should I do if I lose my house keys in a public place?

If you suspect that you have lost your keys in a public place, then we suggest a two-fold approach. Call us at Lock and Key Expert to first help you access your home by picking your lock. After you are safely inside, we recommend that you replace all locks of those keys that were lost. We would be happy to give you an estimate once we know how many locks need replacing and what kind of locks you want.

7. What is a keyless lock?

As the name states, a keyless lock is a locking system that does not have a key. At least not a physical key like traditional locks do. Keyless locks are locked and unlocked with either an electronic key or a remote. Remote-operated locks just need the push of a button. Electronic locks come with a keypad which requires you to enter in your code to unlock the door. These types of locks usually lock automatically.

8. What kind of locks do you repair?

We at Lock and Key Expert repair almost all types of locks, including car door locks, padlocks, lever handle locks, knob locks, deadbolts, and so on. We would be happy to come and take a look at your lock that needs repairing so that we can give you a clearer answer whether or not we can repair it for you. 99% of the time, if a lock can be repaired, we can repair it for you.

9. Can you pick all types of locks?

All types of locks can be picked with the right knowledge and equipment. However, we at Lock and Key Expert take security very seriously and will only pick locks when we are 100% sure of the ownership of the car or property the lock secures. Furthermore, we do not pick restricted locks. For certain specialized locks, you will need to contact the manufacturers; for all other types of locks, we can help.
